The Leeds Older People's Forum was established in March 1994 and has grown to a citywide membership of over 120 voluntary sector organisations working with older people.
The aims of the Forum are:
to provide INFORMATION to older people's organisations about issues affecting the lives of older people to offer opportunities to NETWORKING with other older people's groups and organisations to MONITOR plans, services and other developments which affect older people to provide opportunities for older people to give FEEDBACK to statutory organisations and others about existing and proposed services relevant to older people to INFLUENCE policy and practice at a local and national level to ensure that VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS working with older people are fully involved in shaping servicesThe work of the forum has focused mainly on Social Services, Health and Housing Services but is increasingly addressing wider related issues, which also effect the quality of older people's lives. These include Community Safety, Transport, Lifelong Learning, Leisure, Social Exclusion and Poverty.
Through it's constitution, structure and values the forum seeks to EMPOWER older people and enable them to have an effective voice in commenting on both current and proposed services for all communities in the City of Leeds.
The constitution of the forum enshrines the important principle the POWER in the forum should be in the hands of people ages 60 years or over, only people 60 years or over can be elected as Honorary Officers of the forum.
each member organisation can send 2 representatives to forum meetings but only a representative who is aged over 60 years or over can vote. Each member organisation has one vote.
The forum's management committee consists of the Honorary Officers and up to 20 members. Of the 20 members, 15 must be people ages 60 years or over.
What issues are the
Forum Concernd About?
The work of the Forum has focussed mainly on social services, health and housing services but is increasingley addressing wider issues which also affect the quality of older peoples live's. These include community safety, transport, lifelong learning, leisure, social exclusion and poverty.
Local Role
The Forum is a major partner in the work of the National Service Framework for Older People. The NSFOP is a 10 year action plan to improve health and active life in older age.
The Forum is also involved in the work of the Leeds Older People's Modernisation Team
National Role
The Forum is a member of the Better Government for Older People Network and sends representatives to the Yorkshire Regional Older People's Action Group.
