In 1970 a group of Barbadians came together to form the Barbados Association (Leeds Branch). In 1985 it became a charitable organisation with a very active membership of well over one hundred and fifty members. It is a member of the National Council of Barbadian Associations (UK).
Members of the group are actively involved with local community groups and forums on health, welfare, education and race equality. They were represented at the first Black History Week exhibition in Leeds in 2003. In recent years they have produced a colourful tapestry banner promoting the Association and life in Barbados, and the second banner is almost completed. Members have also advised Leeds Museums and Galleries on items relating to Barbados for the Moving Here project.
